Just pumping out some CVHE's and guess what the charging valve stem has broken off. Any tricks to opening the valve with the chrage still in the machine.

Ditto Jayguy. Just get yourself a 1/2" ballvalve and nipple, take the handle off the valve make sure its in the closed position and do a quick switch with it in a vacuum . Takin the handle off means you can spin it in quick .

ditto, on the fly, and iffen it's not in a vacuum, push some cold R718 thru the cooler bundle
the reason i like using R718 is because you can still vent it if you put in too much or if you have to make a repair.
i also like to sniff a special concoction that i make of 78% R728, 21% R732 and about 1% of R740, R744, R720 and some other stuff that i put in there just for fun.
and after a big meal i will release a little R50

Forgot to mention octyl alcohol to increase the wetting action
The lubricant used in R-50 is it vasaline based.
In my younger days I had a 113 sidewinder which had a non operating charging valve so I carried the 100#er up a step ladder and charged it through the condensor. The good old days, now I couldn't lift a 100#er and climb a ladder to save my life.
