This one is around the corner from me so I see it daily. Nothing wrong with the defrost system, just that it was left on 90 minutes and that doesn't cut it in our climate. When conditions get extreme like we had a few weeks ago, it gets overwhelmed and builds up like this. Finally the ice is off the coil but still little air gets through. Today we hit upper 30s and much of that is finally gone, for now.
Amazing however, to see units like this all over the place. Don't homeowners ever wonder why their unit looks like this? Or wonder why there is NO heat out of the pump? Or wonder why their electric bill suddenly went up?

Maybe outdoor thermostat, I just finished installing my first heat pump with 96% furnace for backup. I guess I'll wait and see how things go.

I think this heat pump is low on Freon because of the ice on the liquid line I have worked on thousands of heat pumps in a fairly cold climate and that's what I think the problem is. I don't like working on heat pumps in the winter but the can work well. I would remove all the gas pull a tight 500 micron vacuum may even triple evacuate and weigh in a fresh charge.

It does it each winter. Set on 90 minutes, the frost builds up during really damp & foggy weather and finally so bad that the 10 minute defrost cycle just melts it off the coil, the rest stays hung like this. It goes away and other than some heavy frosting on a cold morning like today, it's fine.
