    Stocking Parts

Just looked at a post "perfer hot or cold side" one comment was stocking parts for the hot side is too much due to the great variety of parts.

Yes granted many manufactures have special parts for their equipment made just for them and anything else that does the same thing just wont fit in the damm hole.

Put there is a selection of parts that can be used anywhere - universal intermittent pilot ignition modules?

So my question is this how many of you doing hot or cold side (i/we do both) carry universal parts (those that can in most cases get things running again), OEM parts, or no parts.

the company i work for is moving towards the later, no parts, not even universal. i think this is the wrong move because if you want to charge the highest rates in town telling a business that makes its money (and pays you from that enterprise) that they will have to wait and pay for overnight shipping in order to have their kitchen fully operational then someone with some sense could move in on that business buy at least stocking some parts.

My situation is almost to the point that a black fitting bought but not used (don't have any stock to pull from) should be returned - less then a $1. I have to justify it 1/2" black is used on almost all cooking appliances and many heating.

They just sent back a intermittent pilot module, (we are located in a small city w/o guaranteed supplies) It is almost to the point where it is better to tell the customer call someelse to make the repair i diagnosed - who will they call next time.

make things clear I needed 3/16 pilot tubing - none

maybe its time to start your own business. order what you need & when you have to order in a part make it 2 & slowly build up what you need.
seems like an ideal opportunity for a good service man.

Ask your employer how much that fitting is going to cost when he pays you for an hour to return a part.
Money is tight and no one wants to buy unnessary stock right now. We all know if you buy extra it just rolls around in the back of the van untill its lost or broken half of the time.
Look at it this way, calculate the number of hours that you wouldnt get, not making that return trip with the part.
Most of your customers are used to paying shipping and waiting for the part

the same customers who demand immediate part replacement are usually the ones you told two months ago they needed to replace xyz part. we stock for our bigger customers who are under contract. everyone else waits a day or two.

i have always carried a fairly lsrge inventory on my truck.
i hate running for parts. at least 15 comb. assemblys w/ some duplicates.
% most of the day to day stuff. may go a week & never get to a partd house
one trip makes an impression on the client & i already have the travel included in the price of the part for the replacement if i had to go pick it up.

No parts in stock = no future jobs in my area. Customers hate to be told that they have to wait yet again for a part. The competiton is too great where I live to be pulling the crap!

    Parts Needed

I need to find a heating coil for a Carrier Mobil Home Package unit. I am unable to find one in the Orlando Florida area because I am not a licensed contractor. Though I am EPA certified to service AC units for the apartment community I work for. Is there anyone in Orlando who sales used parts for HVAC/?

Buy it through your apartment complex.

Some people may not take kindly to your request. So I advise against posting such personal info on an open forum.

i do the in-house maintenance at a casino and i have a problem even getting parts. the warranty expired about a month ago but someone is still calling the techs out for repairs and by the time i get to it i dont have a chance to troubleshoot. when i do find something and order a part it takes a month to show up and the chefs arent very happy

it seems like all i'm there to do is the p.m.'s. whats the point if i'm not going to troubleshoot and repair the equipment?

When I did Computer Room service, we had spare parts cabinets on most of our jobs. When we put a part in the cabinet the customer paid for a percentage of that part, "this was worked out by the sales department." When we pulled a part out, they paid the balance and paid to have the part replinished, if they desired. Cancelled contracts were billed for all the parts in the cabinet. Customers were responible for cabinet security. Most had two locks on them, accessible by our combination and customer key.
