    I have worked with a few women.
    The thing is they just don't look like women.

    I know what you mean. Just look at this pathetic excuse for a woman I hired;

    And, she's not very good at HVAC. I really don't know why I keep her.

    Well, she has a hammer. So obviously she is a highly skilled worker. I would not question her qualifications for one moment.

    Part of the reason, I believe, that there aren't many women in this field is that many aren't even exposed to what exciting work is actually available. The majority of men that I encounter don't really know what all HVAC/R entails, and that we all don't necessarily do the same jobs. People have some pretty weird ideas about what we really do.

    As a previous poster stated, many in this younger generation just doesn't want to do anything that resembles hard work. That's a reason as well. However, I personally don't focus on that. I attempt to expose as many younger people, male and female, to this industry because I think it is one of the best and most interesting fields to work in. If I had known that I would enjoy this work so much, I would have gone to study this trade straight out of high school.

    And no, we all don't look like Robo... No offense, Robo.

    We have a woman that has been a tech. for about 15 years. She's pretty well known and does very well. To answer the question though, I think it's probably the same reason we do not see a lot of men selling clothes at the department store.

    In my 19 yrs i have only seen one female tech and she was the worst. only was there to annoy all of us and flag any hard jobs ie..motors,compressors, soot jobs,etc. The co kept her because she sued when they tried to let her go for bad work and she won.Thats b/s. imo women cant handle all the rigors and hard work we all do. The late nights,screaming customers,and heat/cold its just not a feild for women....sorry to any offended.

    Better jobs elsewhere

    Why work in HVAC when there are better jobs elsewhere that pay more money and have better working conditions? Plus the fact AA helps women just as much to get a well paying job as a lower paying one.

    There are a few of us out there, sweating and freezing with the rest of y'all. I do it because I enjoy the work. I like being out there with no one looking over my shoulder. I make better money than many of those (boring) office jobs; fewer office politics, too. I have one thing the office workers lack: pride in workmanship and in my trade. Oh, and I don't look like Robo (no offense, Robo!)

    i am a women sevice tech. in phoenix, arizona. the problem is not the work involved. it's the men in the industry. they don't like to be shown up by women who can diagnosis better. that has been my experience.

    Probably some lack of confidence from customers too, not that it is fair, but that is just how it is.

    Hmmmmm. I've been trying for years to find someone to train to do what I do. I've talked to guys until I'm blue in the face about coming to work for me and get some on the job training. They all want $20 an hour, don't know which end of a nutdriver to use and really get turned off at the suggestion of weekend and evening service calls. Was approached by a gal who is the head of maintenance in a timeshare condo, and has been for over ten years. She is riding with me two days a week, on her days off and is hungry to learn as much as possible. She'll have a little problem wrestling ladders and compressors I know, but I'm gonna give her a fair shake and show her what I do. I think she'll be able to cut it,,and it's darned nice to see someone really desire to be taught. As far as the customers,,,after the first day working with me I told her if she got any static from ANY customer,,put her tools in the truck and leave after telling them to perform a physically impossible act upon themselves. I don't care who it is. She seems more than capable, and by golly she has the desire.
    One way to outthink people is to make them think you think. They'll think you're not really thinking what you're trying to get them to think you think...........
