Unhappy Thermostat blows Cap when I turn heat on

My thermostat sparks when I turn heat on; I tried to leave it on heat but it shorted out the thermostat. I tried another one and it shorted out the second one too.

I checked my transformer and even used another transformer.

    That was not the problem

    The fan works fine
    The cooling works fine

I think my heat has something wrong. Is there a way to check the gas valve for a short?

If the gas valve shorts I have to buy another one right?

get a pro. youll cost more money swapping parts and you could do more damage then is already there, i would venture a guess and saying to could maybe be fixed without swapping any part

The rules say this is not a DIY site. In your case the best course of action is to have a tech. check out your system. All this stuff can kill you if you don't know what you're doing.

Is there a way to check the gas valve to see if it is good or bad?
Maybe check the resistance with a ohm meter? what are good readings and bad?

To the OP - Twilli was just making a joke....

Seriously though, the best readings that you come up with on a go, no go test for a general rule continuity test on a specialized generic proprietary combustible disseminating electrically operated open and closer would best be compared to the listing in your local phone directory of a reputable heating professional. In plaing english, no DIY - call a pro or you may burn your house down/kill yourself. Have a nice day.......

You might just need a bigger thermostat. Maybe yours is too small.
I like DIY'ers. They pay better to fix.

You are going to need a pro. If it does it immediately its very unlikely its a gas valve since in the order of start up operation thats the last thing to happen. I would want a professional because there should be some sort of fuse/breaker to protect thermostats, control boards, and transformers from letting out their smoke...

The problem is that magic smoke. You cannot let it out of that little anticipator wire! You must find a way to keep the magic smoke in! Maybe Twill has a BOX of 12 * anti smoke* gas valves he could ship.
