    Books

Most trades have a book that most in the trade recognize as the best reference guide for that trade. If you could recommend one book for the HVAC trade, what would it be. I am looking for a good book on theory as well as practical application.

    Thanks

Modern Refrigeration or Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology are both good books for the basics. They will not be enough though to actually do any real hands on work in my opinion. Trades like electrical and plumbing you can learn a lot from a good book, but because this trade covers so many aspects of all trades pushed into one you will need many books to become even remotely competent. I would recommend starting with one of those though.

Troubleshooting and servicing Modern Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Systems by John Tomczyk, I also like Doolins Trouble Shooters Bible by Jim Doolin. The 2 books Big Unit mentioned are great for the classroom. These two books are more for the guys in the trenches. Jim Doolin was a repairman not an engineer so some of the diagrams are a little crude, but it is easy to understand.
