Hey guys, I just bought a used coke machine that is not cooling. The compressor makes a grumbling sound like it's stating up for a few seconds then stops. It does this about every ten seconds or so. I'm leaning in the direction of a low charge but I don't want to put ports on it yet until I can eliminate any other possibility. So I decided to get some advice from the experts.
I'll get the model and serial number tomorrow.

I don't even know what they look like on these things. I was looking for a start cap. LOL
I'll second the 3 in 1.
Sounds electrical, but I could be wrong.
Sorry to sound so lame but a lot of these components are foreign to me. Do these have a start cap built into the compressor, or rather sitting on the side of it?
Since it's a 120 volt would I wire the cap booster any differently?

I used to manage a restaurant. If memory serves, a coke machine uses practically the same components as a prep table. Anywho, I once had a prep table that would only start for a few seconds and then quit. On the side of the compressor is an overload relay. If your coke machine wasn't maintained, its possible that the overload was tripping quite a bit and wore out (in the case of my table). Might give that a look.
Another things is there's all this tar like substance allover the place. I don't know if it came that way from the factory but it looks like it was used to paint the condenser coil. I would think that would serve to insolate the condenser.
OK it's a
Dixie-narco
DNTP 232-8

R12 8.5 OZ
10. Amps
You do know no extension cords on those right?
Got a pic of the tar stuff?? I always try to keep them cond"s as clean as I can! Grease from a fryer maybe? Taste it and let us know. Electrics are on the can ( compressor ) .
Did you by beers for it yet?

Plug straight into wall outlet and see if it fires up. Extension cords, especially poor quality ones, will have a voltage drop and current gain, not good. Could be the problem. Do you own any quality tools?
if so, check that start cap. or replace. Next would be replace the current relay. Good luck.
Pics would help a lot.
That is a current relay.
Can't quite decipher what you are trying to show in the third picture.
I suppose that it is possible that it doesn't have a capacitor. I would pop a new relay and overload in and see what happens. There are various multi-purpose kits made by Supco and probably others that will serve both purposes.

AWESOME, It's getting cold. Thanks guy's, I'll pick up a 3 in 1 tomorrow.
In pic #3..... fix that pinch on the 3/8 copper... use a pinch tool.
