A former boss of mine was also scammed by a company who altered his telephone recording. And this was a legitimate business too (so we thought). Basically the only way to stay completely safe is to hang up the phone if something doesn't seem right. It's sad that's this is the world we live in...

I got an email the other day asking for the same, 3 mini-splits with no accessories and they wanted to pay with a credit card. I immediately remembered this thread and told them c.o.d for the units and I never heard back!

    "Directed at HVAC business's."

There is no "s" after the apostrophe, in "Directed at HVAC business'."

    You're welcome.

    Scammer.... at it again [sic]

I received a strangely written quote request and decided to goggle it... seems that scammers repeat their scams; too much work I guess to come up with freshly written scams.
I was able to match to someone who posted the same scam back in '06 ... I think; anyways.

This time it's an email from..... (wait for it) "Larry Bones" - Email Address Removed
Larry Bones ??? really, is that the best fake name you can come up with?
    ok the email below:

    Good day,
My name is Mr.Larry Bones and I will like to know if you can supply some air conditoners for me, its going to be picked up at your store location when parked for pick up, after payment.I will like to know if you have instock,

and also let me know if you do accept credit card as a method of payment also, wish you all the best in business and i would be looking forward on hearing from you soon.

    best regards,
    Larry.

Here's tip of the day for Larry....
next time provide your business name, address, business email, phone number & fax ..... oooohhh right , that would be bad for you.
Next ... don't say "Good Day" - seems like an international red-flag
Next ... don't say "Mr" when identifying yourself - you "thinks" too much of yourself
Also, remember, If you were scammed as a child - you can grow up and break-that-chain.... because Nobody likes a scammer.

I like how one of his favorites is the "durable brand". What exactly is the "durable brand"?

Not sure if you would call it a scam, but something to be careful of:

I stopped at a well known gas station here in town and proceeded to pay at the pump. Everything was normal until it was time for my receipt, it didn't print. Furthermore, it didn't instruct me to take my receipt or that it failed to print. So I went inside and asked for a duplicate receipt. As I was walking out, I noticed that my name wasn't on the receipt, someone else was listed. Also, my CC number wasn't correct either. So I walked back to the clerk and showed him what happened. (The station wasn't busy, and there was nobody before me at that pump.) He seemed confused as well, and wrote up the incident, then proceeded to charge my card for the fuel purchased. Normally that one incident wouldn't seem odd, but two days before this it happened to our CFO at a different station. No indication that there was anything wrong, it just took the info from someone else and let me fuel up.

I get a call every couple of days from this company in Florida, they always begin the call with "your harder to track down then my wife's boyfriend" or "how ya doin? Better than A-Rod right?" barrel of laughs, very professional....Then they claim that they are a supplier for my company and they just wanted to check to see if I'm still the guy that handles purchases for the facilities. This leads to them saying hey, I see your in need of xxx, we'll get that sent out to you right away, and if you give me your home address we'll send you a nice cooler, or clock radio, or whatever useless junk they have laying around for being such a great customer. They then try to send you xxx at a 5000% markup (literally) without ever giving a price. I got lucky and told them to f-off right off the bat, but a co-worker of mine wasn't too happy when he got the bill for his $700 case of light bulbs, I hope he enjoyed his cooler though...
