I do 1 of 3 things to telemarketers:

    1. Make up some foreign language and talk to them in it.
    2. Act like I'm retarded and answering the phone (pretty easy for me)
    3. Put the phone down and walk away.
I like DIY'ers. They pay better to fix.

I like #3. The others take a lot of effort. But also, I've tried the different language thing, but it's MUCH harder to do when it's face to face--seems easy enough, but it's not!

    playing by different rules

The toughest thing about scammers is that they prey on people who play by different rules. I suggest that if they don't pick up on the fact that they're being unreasonable, it's they're problem, not yours. Be brutally honest and tell them you feel you're being scammed. Then, politely and quickly end the conversation.

You could be contacted by e-mail, the "person" usually depicted as a female with hearing problems will inquire about the purchase of equipment. In this case 3 mini-splits for a friend or orphanage.
They will supply you with credit card number(s) that will initially work, and arrange to pick the equipment up at your shop. As this progresses the purchaser will suddenly have a family emergency and ask you to arrange shipment thru a nationally known shipping company that will not accept credit cards. You will be asked to write a check for payment to the shipping company and again charge the fees to a credit card.
They of course are being shipped overseas, in this case Ghana.
In this case the scam was found out well before the loss of any equipment or dollars...don't let yourself become a success for them, these people are very good actors and will try and get your emotions to lead you into doing something that you will regret!
Got ask this summer by the same people. 3 5ton units going to an orfanage. person on the phone was an operator for the deaf. Almost cookie cutter to the above quote. Only differance was location. I still see "terry Wilsons" email address on my G-mail list.
If you think our goverment is screwed up. You haven't lived in another country.

Me too, about 2 weeks ago. Also been getting emails about the same exact amount of minisplits but with a different name by the sender. Now I'm wondering if I should run these credit card numbers for a couple 1O grand, then ignore them when they try to contact me back!

You always have to be careful. There are a lot of scams out there. If something is too easy or too good to be true it probably is.
