Information: Hamburg Center is a residential facility for individuals with developmental disabilities, operating 24 hours a day/seven days a week. This position has rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays. First, 7am-3pm; Second, 3pm-11pm; Third, 11pm-7am. Travel and Overtime as needed.
Description of Duties: Under normal supervision of the Utilities supervisor and/or Utility Plant Operator 2, employee in this classification is assigned to the operational and/or maintenance task force within the Boiler Plant.
Is responsible and required to conform to all confined space entry procedures, which includes being either medically certified or medically exempt for respirator use.
Observes operation and makes adjustments in automatic operating controls in heating plant, such as boiler panel board, forced draft fans, up-take damper controls and traveling grate stokers.
Performs simple flue gas testing for use in adjusting controls for efficient combustion. Performs routine boiler feed water testing, interprets results, adds chemicals as required.
Observes and maintains the vacuum pump operation. Maintains dearator temperature. Starts and stops feed water pumps when necessary to maintain water level in steam boilers.
Operates coal conveyor and ash removal system and soot blowers as required.
Blows down mud drums, water wall headers and boiler water columns as required. Pressure tests boiler safety relief valves.
Lubricates equipment on a fixed schedule. Is responsible for cleaning, dusting, painting and maintaining areas related to power plant and utility system. Assists in preparing boilers for inspection.
Receive both written and oral instruction from the Utilities Supervisor who reviews the performance of the employee in this position.
Essential Functions: Travel throughout the facility and power plant as needed to check and perform maintenance on utilities system.
Perform tests or water samples, analyze and interpret results of test to ensure proper chemical levels are in boilers.
Operate hand valves, chains, pumps, push buttons, turn dials, push and pull levers, use wheel barrow as required.
Operate manual and power tools.
Move equipment and materials.
Keep track of fuel usage and steam production.
Make entries in daily boiler logs as needed.
Interpret data from gauges, charts, and fire to make adjustments to fire.
Analyze problematic conditions.
Perform repairs to equipment and machinery as required.
Perform preventive maintenance on all assigned equipment.

Have held regular civil service status in one of the following classifications:
Utility Plant Helper
Minimum experience and training required for the job.
Meritorious service; defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last due overall regular or probationary performance evaluation was higher than unsatisfactory or fails to meet standards.
Seniority, defined as a minimum of one year(s) in the next lower class(es) by the posting closing date of 10/30/2009.
