We still make 23xR Centrifugals. We won't carry a full maintenace contract on the obsolete XL (e"X"tra "L"abor) machines due to the old slide valve issues. The new 30XW compressor is like a smaller beefed up version of the 23xL compressor mounted on a chiller designed like the 30HX. Less noise higher capacity range.
Refer all arguments to the wife, she's better at it.

I've used an open loop 2.5 ton Versatec in Southeast Michigan since 2002

I've used the Versatec (VXV030) since the house was built in 2002. The only issues I have had with it are due to the open loop. When it is super cold out the unit has to flow anyway or the discharge will freeze up and the unit will thermally cut off. It works w/o the em heat until it is below 5 degrees F for several days. I have a separate wood stove for the backup, the 8kw backup is still in the box I also have the desuperheater setup. I think I've been saving money, but as it was a new install in a custom house there is no really sure way to check, but if the propane truck going to my neighbors is any indication, I think I am still ahead Consumers Energy bill averages about $200 / mo for all useage in the house kept at 73-74 year round
