    BBC-SD Touch

For touch panels do not forget the BBC-SD for BACnet. Go to www.bacnetcontrol.com. These are competitively priced and are being used in a multitude of installations. They are MSTP devices. You can click on the list of distributors to find out where to buy.

Sometimes you can't get straight answers, but my take on the BBC-SD is it is targeting the need for a small system local display for monitoring and modifiying some system operations via touchscreen. I have not yet used this device but have heard mixed reviews.

I can help on the datatype question.

In BACnet there are two kinds of encoding, primitive and constructed. Constructed data are lists, arrays, basically anything “complex” that requires opening and closing tags.

A perfect example would be Device-Address-Binding. This variable returns a list X long that has the device instance followed by a choice of address, either ethernet, IP, MAC, etc. In this way the datapoint "Device-Address-Binding" constructed and not primitive.

Primitive encoding is used for all the rest of the BACnet properties.

The list of primitive datatypes is shown below:

    Type 0 = Null
    Type 1 = Boolean
    Type 2 = Unsigned
    Type 3 = Integer
    Type 4 = Real
    Type 5 = Double
    Type 6 = Octet String
    Type 7 = Character String
    Type 8 = Bit String
    Type 9 = Enumerated
    Type 10 = Date
    Type 11 = Time
    Type 12 = Object-ID

We've been using the BBC-SD on some job sites that we have Reliable Controls on, and it works just fine. We also install AAM products and use the NB-SD (same thing) and have not had any issues.

I called our sales guy tonight and talked with him about this. He's offered different touch-screen solutions in the past, including Advantech, as well as Loytec's L-VIS display. When offering all three to an end-user, they typically always select the BBC-SD platform. The biggest factor is cost and then simplicity.

I like the fact that Loytec's display can do all the things it can. Loytec has awesome products and they certainly have a place in the market, especially when it comes to LON. When it comes to a building that we're installing controls on, we just don't need all the power that L-VIS has in it. There is already a front-end on the site that is doing all the animating pictures, e-mails, alarming, trending, etc. The controls are also controlling just fine and don't need any help.

I don't know what our costs are (I'm just a dumb application engineer), so please don't preach to me about it as I can't sympathize with who is right or wrong with price.

Closing thoughts....AAM and Loytec make cool stuff. Does anyone know if either of them will have SD or L-VIS listed with BTL soon?

What classification works for you on LVis? It's got 12 and 15 inch size available now with audible alarms possible now, email, VNC server, trending, scheduling.... Is it strictly a display?

And I agree with you that it can be way more than just a display. L-VIS makes what Tridium is trying to do with their touch-screen JACEs that have yet to come out look Mickey Mouse. If anything, Loytec should be trying to displace Tridium and knock them down a few sizes.

Side note, we've acutally ripped out a couple of LON-based JACEs and put in L-VIS. The customers are wayyy happier with L-VIS.

By the way...this thread is about BACnet Routers. Why did touch-screens and displays come up all of a sudden?

Moe and Larry started it up... so I played Curly and now you brought up one of my favorite devices... I'm a little PC obverse. So, I like having a device on the network. Anyway- Loytec is open protocol only... that being said maybe you want to look at the LINX and also look at our PDF's about our Symposium we just had in Vienna if you want some hints on our multi-protocol solutions.

Is your customer using a VNC client to remote connect to the LVIS or simply using the LVIS directly?
I'd also be curious if they would like a bigger screen with better resolution and color (like the new ones).
