HELP!!! A/C UNIT ISN'T WORKING!!!

I came home from work and the a/c had stopped working. The inside temp was 79 and the unit stays on 73. I checked the breaker and it wasn't fully on, but not to the off position either, if that makes any sense. I put it to off, then it went back to on. I cut the unit back on and the breaker tripped again and the unit never came on. I am a single mom with 2 kids and a mortgage. If i can avoid a repair bill then god bless. I am female but not incapeable of mechanical repair. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
