Both work well for duct design, Elite allows for Manual D calculation without drawing the building out. Which works well, and saves time, if you are using autocad or another design software.

If you really understand duct design/sizing you won't need software
AND if you don't the software won't help because you really don't understand where the answer is coming from and therefore won't know when it is garbage in and garbage out.
Just noticed the post date is this still alive? You have got to learn from other people's mistakes! Because God knows you don't live long enough to make them all yourself !!!!!!!!

Duct Design
I would agree to some extent. Most believe that ACCA Manual D is a duct sizing procedure. This is only partialy correct, Duct sizing is a by-product of Manual D. Known CFM, velocity and material allows a ductulator to size ducts. This is not the focus of Manual D calculation.

Hands down - Elite RHVAC has a resident plugin called Manual D Ductsizer. It's a brillant add on based on "real" pressure drops. If you try it, you will quickly find out that the longest critical path is not always the one with the largest pressure drop.

Manual D is based on assumptions. If your design does not follow those assumptions, you must apply correction factors found in the duct tables. Elite Manual D Duct sizer calculates the corrected pressure drop and EL based on your real design velocities.

Agreed, using real velocities and C factors will give you a more scientific answer than the crude Equivalent. Lengths. This might be great for a large commercial design but the simplicity and the fudge factor inherent in D will compensate for residential job site, installer creativity.
If the techs out there would just understand the fundamentals, many of the air related problems could be reducedYou have got to learn from other people's mistakes! Because God knows you don't live long enough to make them all yourself !!!!!!!!
