Went on a No heat call at a rental house a long time ago. I had to jump out the thermostat to trouble shot the furnace because the tenats had the stove on and the house was above 90 degrees.
How did they control the temperure opened up the windows.

We can not charge for anything, it is a total maintenance. I just told them "yes you are in the right place!"

We had a lady complain about it being hot in her office, she was wearing a sweater, my guy asked me if he should tell her to take her sweater off, I told him to never tell a woman to take anything off, I don't want one of my guys getting accused of sexual harrasment.
I told him to adjust the damper that fed her office, he said it was already opened up all the way, I told him to go adjust it while she was watching and tell her he opened it up a little more and that it would make her office cooler, that did the trick.
I worked in an office that people were always complaining about it be too hot, too cold, we put in a thermostat for them so they could control it themselves, the wire went to nowhere, but it made them happy.
One way to deal with the smoke is sell them an ozone machine.
