Why does a compressor unit need to be level?

I have read a compressor unit should be set level, but can't find a detailed explanation why. Just curious.

My Carrier user manual says the compressor manuf specifies it must be level. Would it have to do with the compressor's rotational action being on a centered axis?

I have also heard having it level eliminates stress that would otherwise be put on bearings (fan bearings?)

Fan bearings, compressor bearings, compressor oil level, cabinet drainage, appearance.

Hot dog, instead of one reason, you got five! Jackpot!
    • Electricity makes refrigeration happen.
    • Refrigeration makes the HVAC psychrometric process happen.
    • HVAC pyschrometrics is what makes indoor human comfort happen...IF the ducts AND the building envelope cooperate.

    Ok, cool

I think I read in Popular Mechanics or somewhere that a level compressor actually affects efficiency up to like 5%. Could that be true?

If you could find and link to the article in question, it would help the discussion here. Would be interesting to hear their reasoning.
