The supply and return are split in the middle where the screws are.The return starts on the far left side of the duct.


Here is what it looks like inside the unit. The clear opening dimension is 7"x18". This is a 5 ton unit. There is a 20x30 filter grill in the house.
notice the rust from condensate sitting. The condensate only drains when the unit shuts down.I didnt have my magnahelic this day but you can bet that the static was well over 1".

I see they set the unit sideways on the roof, must have been an over/under unit there at one time.

Some of those over/under setups had small returns, I see alot of those around here.

your exactly right, probably was an old Goettel (one tough old unit )with a marginal duct design and install. Who ever came up with over under ought to be shot.

I see some really bad changeouts here. The worst is when they take out an over/under and mount a big ass unit downshot over the existing roof jack. Sometimes they end up with a hugh transition and the unit is standing 2 or 3 feet adove the roof.

I prefer to just cut in a new properly sized return and switch everything to normal side by side setup.

I like to set a curb over the old duct and cut all the old crap out and redo it. Most people dont like curbs on resi but it gives you the opportunity to upgrade to better air delivery,and very happy customers.It is a lot of work tho.This is from a few years back.

Our codes here require a dual disconnect for heat pumps with strip heaters, one for the unit and one for the strips.Single feeds are not allowed.

It said it is to be removed by the consumer, kinda like the mattress tag. LOL good work to letter of the law. a rarity today!
