I wish your husband the best of luck. He is very lucky to have a wife like you.

It is a tough market out there, the economy is in rough shape, so try not to get discouraged.

I highly recommend he try to get involved in some kind of community service where he uses his skills.

Habitat for Humanity - HVAC installs
Local EMT and/or Firefighter Squads - FREE maintenance (filter changes, coil cleaning, etc.)

Just get involved. In this business, there are A LOT of connections, meeting a few people and showing them he is a good person will go a LONG way.

I make it a point to try and learn one new thing a day. Sometimes I get bonus lessons!!!!!

i think your hubby needs to start looking for an install job to get in the door. maybe have him try for dispatcher. then go on ride alongs on his own time , with no pay , on saturdays and sundays. they are hurting in that area due to the economy , lots of competition. an owner would be happy to have a dispatcher that knows the lingo. i talked to a buddy down there this week. they are very slow , large refrigeration outfit. i think he may have to put a service job on hold

thank you, you guys are wonderful...........we were just talking about him trying for an "voluntary apprenticeship" for the experience, the connections and hopefully a good reference.
We have looked at the hvac sales jobs.......but they want a lot of experience to. But dispatch we didnt think of!!! We will now *S

Dispatcher is good, there are a lot of related ideas. Also think of doing local volunteer places (habitat for humanity, emt/firesquads etc.), do hvac there. Its a small world, in Habitat for Humanity you work with a lot of contractors so it can be GREAT contacts.

I am not being a "jerk" But unless your " Hubby " starts getting off his but and doing alot of this for him self. He will never make it in this trade or any other trade. It has been said before. "You have to want it" It doesn't appear that he wants it

Thank you, and he 'wants it" its just whats left of his confidence has taken a hell of a beating, being out of work for 6 months, having to live with family who feel free to plant the "knife" of encouragement.........its a horrible situation that many folks are in. I'd like to go hide under a rock myself *L* but its my turn to support him. And im sure, that once he is working, his "true" self, confident, inquiring and determined will re appear.

In the meantime, we do the best we can. And i've kinda gotten attached to you guys *L

I read the entire thread before I decided to put my 2 cents in so here goes:

1. quit counting how many resumes/letter have been sent our, it will only depress you.

2. Tell the the "techswife" hubby to join the forum and get know here, Now! no excuses. I don't know anyone here personally but I have gotten massive amounts of info simply reading posts and throwing out dumb questions.

3. I got into HVAC/R by accident......and have loved almost every day of the last 29+ years. I lucked out soooo many times and I have not been out of work since 1987. I know this is probably not encouraging but I say this because I started as an apprentice doing every nasty job they could give me making $5.00 and hour.

4. Most here will say that, in some respect or another we have all had to "pay our dues" so to speak. Hubby will learn good stuff no matter where he starts in this business. He can learn even more on this forum.


5. Tell "techswife" Hubby to get signed up on HAVC-Talk ! Did I say that already?
