when you first start with a residential company is it best to have your own tools ? outside the basic hand tools.my own recovery pump ?I'm not sure what i should have when i start working outside the basic tools.i have about 9 months until school is out and i would like to be as prepared as possible so anything you guys can suggest would be appreciated.I would like to be as job ready as i can.

Every company is different, In my area the norm is you supply all hand tool, meters, gauges, leak detector and such and the company supplies vacuum pump, recovery machine and tanks.

You should be good with your basic hand tools, manifold and meter. Most companies will provide the rest (torches, vac. pump etc.)especially to an entry level tech.

If your meter does not have a function to test capacitors consider picking up a cap tester. Good luck.

This is about where we are. I'm not resi, but this seems fair to me. If I had to buy all the tools, I might as well work for myself.

If you have your own stuff it says you're committed to the work, because you've made an investment. You've put your own money on the line.

True True. But he is just starting out. Just supply your own hand tools and then later on you will accumulate other specialty tools.

The other day my boss compared my van to a tool store. I told him: Yeah I should charge the company rent when the other techs. need to borrow something, since you don't replace my tools when they get wore out. He scowled and walked away.

Dont buy no Chinese tools, you will have to buy the good ones later any ways. That is what most beginers do. Buy only Channel Lock, Klein, Crescent, and other USA brands.

When I made the decision that this was going to be my trade, I bought Craftsman tools. Sears are almost everywhere.

Good advice. I had a young tech. that could not get a bolt loose on a flange with his adjustible wrench. Which broke. I tossed him my diamond (crescent bought them out and shut them down) adjustible and broke the bolt loose. He asked where I got the wrench and how much I paid. I said 28.00 he said well I can buy another one at the flea market like the one he had for 5.00. I stopped and looked at him and said that one was 15 years old.
