    Split systems vs. ductless

    Why are the condenser units for ductless systems much smaller than conventional split system condensers of similar capacity and efficiency? For example, a high SEER 3 ton conventional unit can weigh about 350lbs and occupy a 3' x 3' x 4' cube. A 3 ton condenser for a ductless system, however, measures only 3' x 3' x 1', weighs less than 100 lbs, is several dB quieter, has less than half the LRA of a conventional unit, and has the same efficiency overall.

    Are manufacturers of conventional split systems just behind the technology curve or is something else going on here?

    Even the 5 ton units don't weight 350 lbs, put a few of them on roofs.
