    fire hazard

ripped out a duct system last week to fix some serious airflow issues and this is what I found above the duct.

This is a serious fire hazard folks. Also this is a potential death trap for anybody that might crawl or come into contact with that duct and the wire.

There's probably more of that lurking behind the walls.
General public's attitude towards our energy predicament: "I reject the reality of finite resource depletion and substitute it with my own; energy is infinite, we just need an alternative storage medium to run the cars on. The economy can grow indefinitely - we just need to "green" everything! Technology is energy! Peak what?"
