Chemical treatment for condenser water?

My background is commercial and I know a condenser water loop going to a closed loop tower has anti-scaling chemicals installed and the water/tower is checked regularly.

Do you have to add anti-scaling chemicals to a residential GSHP system and does the water need to be maintained?

You need to add antifreeze (at least here in Canada). We typically buy antifreeze with prohibitors in it.
Propylene glycol is food safe but is thick and increases pumping costs.
Methanol is basically alcohol and works great and is cheap but needs special handling as it is extremely flammable.

Antifreeze is the only thing you need for ground loop, no chemical maintenance required.

We also use methanol here in Ky..... like he sail, basically antifreeze.
