    P66 Variable Speed Controller..

    ... for a Data Aire condenser fan. Will it go bad if the motor and 24v supply for the controller are on different phases?

    Does nobody know or is this question being avoided? I'm kinda new to the forum so I'm not sure how folks operate here.

    They are very specific in their instructions that they have to be in phase. Why I don't know? I just do it.

    I think it's page six in the instructions that says the 24 volt supply to the P66 must be on the same 2 legs as the motor itself. Otherwise, it works poorly or not at all. Easy fix. Usually it doesn't kill the P66, just prevents correct operation.

    I've never seen one wired up wrong to be able to tell you either way. Did the P-66 fail or the motor?
    It might get loud!

    No, the 24 volts doesn't have to bee on the same phase. The reason this is done is to prolong the low voltage circuitry in the control. If the trans is on the same phase, the dc circuits will only be powered when the condensor fan calls.

    If its on another and that phase is live when the power is on to the unit, the dc circuit will always have power.

    The factory also recommends a seperate trans. Some units that come with a P66 already installed, usually don't put in the second trans. to save money. Thus keeping the circuity live. They will use the same trans that powers the stat and other contactors.

    Mr. HVAC I think you may be wrong. I have seen them wired to different phases and it will cause the fan to stop when it gets to the high end of the P66 controller range. Not sure why it does it but I have seen it with my own eyes. it needs to be wired exactly as the diagram shows using the same phase of power.

    The P66 failed. Actually a couple of them have. I can't find any other reason other than the phasing. I think what happen was someone changed out the var. motor at some point and just wired it back up on a different leg.

    Hmm

    FIX,

    I don't doubt what you said about high end failure, but I have never come accross this problem yet? Have used many of them over the years.
    Only had a problem if motor amp exceeded controller.

    I've had some Carrier MotoMasters ( a related product) fail from heat and low voltage. The aluminum slab on the back has to be ventilated. I'll sometimes drill a hole in the condenser box to allow air to be sucked over the cooling fins, it doesn't take much to keep them happy.

    I've had 3 of those fail. All 3 started leaking freezone out of the control box and made a nice oily mess.

    Maybe I didn't have the refrigerant on the same phase? lol

    I have not had probs with the phasing, but they are notorious for leaking freon!

    The controls throttling range is fixed an can't be ajusted. The operating range press is ajustable. U should not have to ajust it though.

    Small hole in the top upper left hand corner with a straight adjustment screw below. You can adjust the fan pressure start point.

    Usually they are installed in the control cabinet so its hard to access the hole and I have had to unbolt the controller and lean the top out more than once.

    The other thing you must watch out for:

    when replacing a motor or cap, any mistake in wiring, particularly the cap wires, will let the smoke out of the P66 board.

    I usually don't adjust them. They work right out of the box.

    I agree but unfortunatley not everyone else does. Hence my previous post on where the adjustment screw is!
