1, There is no definitive max I know. I have seen gas logs with a BTU input as high as 120,000.

2, The engineers are going for a yellow flame, so it looks like a real fire.

I think Peterson had a display vented gas fireplace a one of the hearth conventions that was a million btus. I don't think my wallet could support that burner though.

Some are designed to have yellow flames while burning properly, but others, a yellow flame is a sign that there is a problem.

I second jtp's answers. You will need a professional to get a permit to run the gas line and install the gas logs.

Gas fireplaces are not for the DIYer and bad things happen when improperly installed.
