Rheem Unit - HPC Reset - Why?

What is the High Pressure Control reset button for on the outside unit and what causes it to need to be reset - A/C was out last night - turned it off overnight - turned on in morning - still blowing warm - went out back and saw fan on condenser unit not moving - saw reset switch - pressed it and it started up and is now blowing cold inside - so - what caused the need for a reset?

It's there to protect the compressor. If it has a high pressure problems, needs service.

If last night was the first time you tried to use your unit in cooling mode.
    Check your air filter.

If It's a heat pump, this might be the case. If it's a conventional a/c unit, a dirty air filter will not make the HPC trip out.

There is a number of things that could cause the HPC to trip, better call a pro fer service.

possible cloged/dirty cond. coil. System needs to be properly checked out , cleaned and serviced. Just pushing reset will cause damage to system.
