I have a 10 seer Trane heatpump, 3 1/2 ton, built in 1992 and matched air handler. I live in SW Florida.
I am interested in up-gradeing SEER.....
Tell what would happen if I put in a 13 Seer condenser...How will it work with my older Air Handler ???? What seer would it come up too ???
THANX

There have been previous posts on this subject.
You're asking for trouble with that set-up, especially because it is a heat pump condenser. The newer higher SEER systems have larger coils than the older 10 SEER systems.
As I recall from previous discussions:
- The refrigerant charge will not be correct and may have to be adjusted going from cooling to heating.
- Your SEER will be less than 10.
- The btu output will be less than the original 3.5 tons.
- Your electric bill may go up.
- The new condenser may not be warranted because it is installed on a mis-matched system.
- The HVAC repairman will love you because of future repair work.
You've gotten 17 years out of that original system. Maybe time to upgrade the whole system.
