need major help... no where to turn

I am installing a digital thermostate and i need some help. my wife thinks that the A/C is running way too long when it is on and that the temperature that the thermostate is saying it is must be off because the house is freezing (according to her)

I had a manual (mercury) thermostat hooked up. I do not know if I have a multi stage or single stage heat pump so I am kind of confused. What I do know is that when I turn the heat on, if I turn it up a bit higher than needed, a little blue light comes on and it blows really hot, and a technician referred to this as "strips". My guess is that it is an auxilary heat source. It must be electric because I have no gas to me house.

THe wiring that was hooked up to the original thermostat was as follows:

Green wire hooked to G on the thermostat
    Red to R
    Blue to B
    Purple was not hooked up
    Brown to X
    White to W2
    Yellow to Y

I followed the instructions for my new Hunter 44360 thermostat and this is how i have it hooked up:

    Green wire hooked to G
There was a jumper from RC to RH, and I left it there
    Yellow to Y/O
    Red to RH
White & blue wires to W/B
    Brown is not hooked up
    Purple is not hooked up

There are three switches on the back of the panel. One is for Auot-Recovery and I know what that is. One has options STD or HP. I had it set to both and it did not seem to make a difference. Another switch is the Fan Option and it has HG or HE. I have it on HG.

    PLease, please help me.
