Whatever Happened to the Good Old Days?

I rememebr when PCB's were dangerous and were never labeled on a schematic. Com-Ed dealt with those. Oh, life was so simple>>>>>>

    Thermo-couple(pile)
    Fan Limit/Relay
Fan Center ( if you were lucky enuf to have a/c)

    and that was IT!

I remember when everyone had a liquid lunch!
Do You think the Combo Drink " Boilermaker " was a "fluke"

And it was usually after lunch when the a/c got charged after a quick purge...
    Vaccuum pump ?
Oh the days of 30/30 that was a perfect charge. Air flow? Dry Bulb? Wet Bulb? SUPERHEAT ? we dont need no stinking Superheat !!!

Sorry , just an older guy who probably quit using rolling papers just in Time.

    Thanks for your time! Mike

Define fan center! Application? But I bet I could figure it out with a schematic.

    No....
You have to go to the Fan Board First, they will tell you where to go.

I remember on my very first solo resi service call a few years ago; it was a no heat on a 1969 Singer electric furnace with a 1981 Bryant heat pump & NO schematics. Yikes! I've never seen so many wires & stuff packed in such a small place. I was really wondering whether or not I had made a wise career choice.

Old furnaces used a mechanical temperature sensor to turn on the fan. there were no relays and no circuit boards. If you wanted to add A/C you needed a Fan Control Center to make the fan come on in cooling. Most old furnaces had their transformers mounted on a 1900 box plate. You simply removed the plate, and installed a Fan Center, which was a new cover plate with a transformer and a relay. you hooked the fan to the high voltage terminals on the relay, and your t-stat and condenser to the low voltage terminals. Now you have an A/C capable furnace.
