    Question PTAC/PTHP reliability questions

My installer has quoted a Carrier unit to replace a 13 yo GE. Is one vs the other any better from a cost/reliability standpoint?

I prefer the GE 5800. From a contractor's standpoint, I like the idea that GE has their own service fleet so we don't have to learn how to work on these glorified window shakers. Also the 5800 is a quiet unit with 2 fans so no sound outside unless the compressor is running. Only HP I know of that runs the compressor & backup. The rest turn off the compressor which is less efficient. From what little experience I have, I'd say Amana tends to be more troublesome but popular due to low price. My ears say the new Carriers are noisier than the 5800.

How about the GE 3800, do they run the 2 fan config as well? I have seen a reference to a 3900 series. Will these be the replacement for the 5800? And finally, I will have my guy quote some GE's but at what point does the cost vs benefit fall? I mean if the 5800 costs are so much higher, where's the point I'm wasting money?
    Thanks

    Well.

If you get a cheaper one.

And it fails when its 95 outside, and your sweating out more then you can drink.
And your guy can't figure out whats wrong.

Is it worth the money you saved.

Same in winter on heat pimp model.

The 3800 is a 2 motor as well but lots noisier inside due to type of fan used. If a 3900 is coming, will be a replacement for the 3800 not 5800.

I was thinking more along the lines of the 3800 vs 5800. So is there a substantial durability benefit on the 5800 or is it all a quiet vs noisy issue?

    Only 3800 I looked at.

Had a vibration that the people in the retirement home didn't like.

It was in their rec hall/room.

Made to much noise for them when playing cards.
