Had it in class about 3mo ago.

The class agreed that it didn't apply to service guys as much as building trades. If I only picked up my cell phone at lunch and breaks I wouldn't have a job the next day.

i like how he mentions how we are losing market share to open shops. not allowed anybody in for too long for whatever reason?
basically only letting in sons, cousins etc is my opinion!
now the non union sector is doing our work at half price with little to no benefits!
24% of the ua is baby boomers and not getting any younger!
first and foremost we need welders!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    WE ARE PIPE FITTERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
your generation had better be very well trained and be very professional, work hard and be the BEST!

In the service side we need to quit outsourcing our work. My shop takes in all the pumps to have seals rebuilt, motors to have bearings put in, why can't we do that? We outsource all our glycol work to a local chemical company, WTF? I have don't glycol for years. It pisses me off to no end to see this work that UA members once did go to outside shops.

    all jokes aside!
some days i just do easy inspections
some days i run some easy service calls
Monday and Tuesday I worked, no. busted my a$$$$$$$$ for 23 straight hours on an emergency repair.
chiller maintenance is pretty easy, the apprentices do most of the work, i just take all the responsibility.
When it is time to bust a$$? I am there!!!!
I am always where I am supposed to be when I am supposed to be there and work over 600 hours a year overtime, always hard overtime! no inspections!
I am proud to be a well trained, honest, hard worker.

    ua proud
I work hard, ethically, honestly and a lot!
I sign all my tickets and write above my signature

    Here is the problem.

First off, let me say that I am a UA fitter.

We almost need to have 2 unions. A construction union and a service union.

So much focus in placed on the construction side of the work that we do that we lose sight of the day to day, pay the bills service work.

Construction is too variable and dependant on the vagaries of the economy, as is being seen in the current economic climate. BIG construction projects are farther apart and fewer between.

Meanwhile, service guys, second class citizens in my local, are steadily working, paying the bills and getting none of the respect for it.

I always use comments in my reports like "Unit is running like a champ at this time"

Both the office and customers get a kick out of it.

Also... After I get my paperwork signed and before I leave I always ask the question, "Do you have ANY questions, comments, or concerns before I leave?"

I have gotten some great reviews for that one, it shows you care about what you did and how the customer feels.

Brother, I couldn't agree more. I went to the meeting just tonight, it was 90% building trades and 10% service. They focused on the service side for a total of 5min out of the hour long meeting. We have been and always will be the read headed step child of our local.

Now the economy is in the crapper, the service side of my company is keeping the bills paid, we have no construction projects going on and they just put the service divison on 32's To take it a step further, the 4th year I was working with today got laid off, I went into the office this morning to hand in paperwork and a few full recovery tanks and he was there getting the bad news.

    Rough times in Ohio.
