Why don't we all act as advocates for professionalism, then?

Done so for 35 years my friend, invested over $1M from a little 4 man company to give techs the tools that 'brand them' as a state of the art tech coming in the the door that not only deserves the pay scale of a high tech well trained technician but also the respect for them and their industry.....
Suit up and show up as a professional and you'll be paid commensurate with that professionalism you display......

    That's great.

What I'm suggesting is a movent in our industry that reaches out beyond individual companies. Maybe someone like you could become the Mike Holmes of HVAC!

You mean like RSES and NATE and other organizations have been trying to do?

We talked about this in the Union VS Non-Union thread. People are cheap, lazy ba$tards that don't WANT quality.

I do in my own neighbourhood Art but....I know you don't believe me but I start my day at 4:45 and close the laptop lid from here/skype China/Taiwan/emails to DC buyers/customers at 10pm damned near 7 days a week. I also have a company that does HVAC/R and needs running/support so it's daunting most of the time.....and that would be for a 28 yr old guy.....I've been doing this for 35 years and have a f---ed up back, knees that have been operated on 4 times and are now bone to bone with no cartilage so it's a little tough some times when a guy who is screaming (exactly what JP just said) about losing his job but wants me to Asian hack a product and send all the money out of the country....
I will also add to JP's comments, which I cynically agree with most the time, that most techs are consummate hypocrites. They don't want to 'put out' but they want to be lavished with a great wage for 'showing up on the job'.........."Condemned is the thief, for he can trust no one".......or as my Mother used to say "you get back in double portions in this life what you dish out"....
Art, I lost 2 jobs yesterday because I refused to cut corners and am known as the 'most expensive HVAC/R contractor on Vancouver Island'.....then in small print every GC will also say but when he walks away from it or you need a f---ed up system straightened out call Lockhart.....stick to your guns and you'll be rewarded....eventually....

PS, I forgot to mention that somewhere in that 90-100 hr. week......I need to spend time with my 3 daughters and wife......the daughters is tough as they are out on their own except for one and the wife is pretty easy because she's putting in the same hours right along side me!!!!
I also have agreement from Johnstone Supply that I make the best DRSA on the market but it would be too much trouble to put the SKU into the computer......see Supertek's previous posts......been getting that for 9 years. So as JP said......the public wants cheap.....they get cheap......and they reap cheap.......and eventually little guys like me give up......while NA sells it's soul for Chinese product.......
I don't mind losing the race when I'm at least invited to the start line but guys straight up.....how many of you have gone into JS or UR or REM etc and demanded them to stock my or other 'good NA built products'........you can start right there Art......OK, I'll put away my soapbox....

Well, that's too much to reply to from my crackberry, but I have to ask this: why did you start out by saying I wouldn't belive you. Anyway, I doff my hat to you, because you work like a conservative!

As for the aspect of professionalism, if we can inspire guys to not be lazy and for companies to not agree to hackiness, then things will get better over time.

When I suggest the Holmes thing I do so because he has become an icon of leadership. Faceless organizations like NATE or RSES are good for the "self starter." What we need is leadership that can build standards and best practices because companies and techs agree that if we ALL decide to "do it right," then no one will be left to do it wrong.

CONSERVATIVE WITH A CONSCIENCE...... is how I like to term myself...we are our brother's keepers so I don't ascribe to the 'well I negotiated a great deal for me but screwed by Subs/workers.....so I'm all good' mentality.
Yes, as a group I belong to says, 'attraction by example rather than promotion' .... but it is frustrating as the 'hackers' are winning right now big time....
I hate saying it but human beings are creatures taught ONLY by pain.....it marvels me that it usually only in the toughest times is when we respect others the most and not ignore common decency and morals. We ain't there yet.....
