Nitschke was known for his strength and toughness. Once, a metal tower on the Packers practice field fell over on top of Nitschke. Lombardi ran over to see what had happened, but when told it had fallen on Nitschke, said, "He'll be fine. Get back to work!" According to Nitshcke's biography, the tower drove a spike into his helmet, but didn't injure him. The helmet (with the hole) is currently on display in the Packer Hall of Fame in Green Bay.

Hey Bret... hope the CT went well.
Hey Gang..... I got home about 2:15..... at about 11:30 I got knockd in the head with a goodman 5t evap coil trying to put it up in an attic through a 2x2 ceiling tile. slipped out of one hand and hit me in the forehead. Felt warm where it hit me and I knew I was bleeding. Ladder almost fell out from under me... got pissed and forced it up and laid it on a 2x4. Came down ladder and a woman at the clinic jaw dropped. I was a mess. ot 8 stitches in my forehead. Nice cut on the palm of my left hand. No stitches required there. so I got to come home early. I was going to try and finish the job but the doc wouldnt let me. Just glad I was at the clinic so they could take care of me.
