I was not aware that private teaching could jeopardize my union benefits.

Damn, that pisses me off.

I'm not in the union club either. They don't like me and I'm not real fond of some of them.

This website has played into that.

i don't think that the younger folk really want to embark on the journey that we all undertook to get where we are in this buisness.
that statement goes across the color lines. young people in general don't want to spend the effort and make the sacrafice.

well, think about it. you learned your technique on union hours. no doubt took some union classes. that kinda makes it (your knowledge) theirs.
they won't want to give that knowledge to non members.

It's kind of like a closed loop system.

Once I've been trained as a union journeyman, my knowledge is the property of the union.

I can now only impart that knowledge to those that have been deemed worthy by the union gurus that permit certain people in.


Even though I've spent a tremendous amount of time on my own time advancing my knowledge and learning things that the union hall hasn't bothered to even offer to teach.


The apprenticeship program is my biggest beef with our local. They have a fantastic, state-of-the-art welding facility. They do all types of welding there and turn out some awesome welders.

When it comes to refrigeration, they didn't even run a class in the 5 years that I was there.
