Bret's courageous 8 year fight with cancer came to an end last night,2/26/17. He was surrounded by Karen, Andy, his mom Bernice, sister-in-law Anita and me. The room was filled with love as we all held or touched him as he passed.
On Tuesday he was in such pain he spoke with Andy and Karen about contacting Hospice. We admitted him in-patient to Transitions LifeCare in Raleigh on Wednesday afternoon. The staff there are angels! Though it is sad that he left us, we are glad that he did not suffer from Wednesday until Sunday evening and is no longer suffering. He has joined our dad and they're probably working on a car or repairing something in heaven.
I am so proud of Bret...he always thought of others. For the past two years he constantly said, "Let's try it, even if it doesn't help me, the research will improve others' chance of survival." He was always speaking of those he met in Relay for Life, the survivors, those battling and those that cancer took from us. He fought so hard for Karen and Andy...they were his primary concern.
The service will be held on Saturday March 4th, at Kirk of Kildaire Presbyterian in Cary.
I will miss my brother... Love you Bret...

So sorry to hear. My granddaughter and our family thank you for your battle.

Doug, thanks for posting Steve's note. I just opened my phone a few minutes ago and saw it.
Of course, this is the news that we were all hoping that we would never hear.
I pray that Bret took my advice. I told him it was the best advice that I could give anyone, and that he deserved to hear it. It is the news that can save us all.

Okay.
I've been mulling this over for a few hours now.
I know that since December, this thread has had over 95,000 page views. That suggests to me that a lot of folks like to check in here every day. Many of them have nothing to do with this business. Some may be survivors. Some may be in treatment. Others know someone who has been touched by cancer.
So, I'm thinking that for the time being, we should keep this going. For all of us. If circumstances change, then we can consider something else.
I think Bret might like that idea.

Art,
I agree.
Thanx for putting that forward. Bret suffered through so many 'new treatments' because he said "it just might help someone else.....likely too late for me.....but someone else may benefit so what the he!!, we should try it". He was such a selfless man.......man, I'm going to miss him. I can't imagine how bad Karen and Andy's hearts are aching right now......

Good morning, everyone!
Doug, I am certain that every treatment was observed closely, and each response was noted for efficacy. Each step to victory over cancer is one small part of a much larger journey, one that we can all share.
