Hello friends of Bret.....Please see the following and respond/help if you can.....
Bret Health Update Jan 28:
Bret has been uncomfortable and went for a brain MRI and CT scan last Saturday, and followed up Tuesday with the oncologists to go over the results. The CT scan showed the melanoma has spread to the pancreas, more lymph nodes, returned to the lungs, and the tumors in the liver have increased in size. The brain MRI showed the 2 tumors were growing and still bleeding, which is causing his left side weakness and vision problems. This week we considered whether to continue on the current Vemu/Cobi or to quit taking altogether and maybe begin hospice care. We asked lots of questions about how the tumor progress will go. The brain tumors will continue to grow and this cannot be stopped (the Vemu/Cobi doesnt do much for brain tumors), so Bret can expect left side weakness and related symptoms to continue to increase, he may become paralyzed on the left side, and may lose his sight in his left eye. Eventually the brain tumors can progress to where he may be in and out of consciousness. With the chest and abdomen tumors growing, his liver and pancreas may stop functioning, and could slowly more or less poison him. If he keeps taking the Vemu/Cobi, it will help to slow down the spread/growth of melanoma. This is a fun game of picking your poison do you want to die from brain tumors or from continued spread of abdomen cancer. He thinks the abdomen progression sounds worse than the brain tumor effects, so for now, Bret decided to stay on the present treatment Vemu/Cobi to try to slow the progress in the chest and abdomen and take the odds for the brain tumors.
Request for Week Day Help. We also learned that you cant start Hospice until you stop treatment. Since his left side is weak, he is having trouble getting around, making it harder for him to be home alone. Because he is going to continue on treatment, we would like to ask for help can people come and stay with Bret during weekdays, full days, half days, or shifts would work, once a week, once every other week, all are helpful. The need is immediate. Other than helping him prepare a light lunch, he is sleeping and resting so you can bring work if you can work remotely, bring a book, or watch a movie. If you are local, have free time during week days, and this is something you could help with over the next few weeks, email Karen back and she will add you to her email list when she sends out a weekly request.
Thanks to everyone near and far for your support. The texts, emails, and cards are uplifting for Bret and he really appreciates them.
Bret and Karen, Andy
