'Evening Bret and everyone. Glad you're keeping busy Things are heating up at work but it involves applying many core skills I wanted to get more experience in.
Hey Bret.....How's it?
Another day in the salt mine.........for a guy that used to work 14 hours a day, I'm pathetic......burnt out by 2pm and need a nap.
Don't like the 'recovery' thing.......

Hi Folks.......I received an update from Karen. Lots of tough days and tough Christmas for Bret, Karen and Andy......
Keep them in your prayers please.......
Hope everyone had a Happy New Year and a Merry Christmas.
Have been feeling a bit low in December and haven't gotten a recent update email out. In the last three to four months, we have received repeated news that is not what we hoped for. In September, we were told that the cancer has spread to the brain and the radiation oncologist recommended whole brain radiation (WBR). Members of our support group who have had WBR warned of incredible exhaustion that would go on and on. For me, I felt as though my brain were on fire, and had the smell of burning flesh. Needless to say, it was not a pleasant experience. Started the new Nivo treatment on Oct 8.
Brain MRI. Early December, we had an MRI to follow up on the WBR impact. The news there was not what we had hoped for, still 6 tumors, and some had grown larger. The radiation oncologist and the medical oncologist both thought the next best course of action was to do pinpoint radiation, also known as stereotactic scalpel. Underwent two treatments, Dec 22 and 30. We will rescan in 2 months (end of Feb) to see if pinpoint radiation has been effective.
Dec 29 we had a CT for the chest and abdomen to see how things were going with the new Nivo treatment for the liver. Unfortunately again the news was not what we were hoping for. It would appear from the CT that the cancer is spreading in the liver, to the intestines and lymph nodes near the area I had surgery in February, and beginning of small tumors in the lungs.
No answers on whether the new treatment is working. The plan is to do 2 more treatments of Nivo in Jan and then another CT, with hopes that the new tumors appeared back in late Sept in between the transition of the old treatment and present treatment. Oncologist and melanoma pharmacist are also working on a Plan B, two treatments, the drugs are very new.
Thank you to everyone who helped take care of Bret these past few months. Thank you for driving Bret to UNC for the new treatment and other doctor appts in November and December: Lesley F., Mike P., Helen S., Janet C., Marv T., and Roy N. These are the most hectic months of the year for a lot of folks and the planets aligned for numerous appts in Dec. We truly appreciate your time! Lesley F., your tamales were great, Sarah S., your cookies rock, and thank you to Cindy C. who saved me by bringing over Christmas dessert when we had none. Sometimes am in tears over how incredible people are to us.
Thank you to those who regularly send Bret cards and notes. Please keep them coming, it's hard to convey, but does amazing things for his outlook, and mine. And if you've been thinking about writing to him or sending a card but just haven't gotten to it (I understand this, I AM this), please do send when you have a moment.
We are still very hopeful and making plans for some days at the beach this summer.
Bret and Karen, Andy

I texted Bret today, and he said he was spending the entire day at UNC.
So, those docs are on his case like white on rice.
