Now, on to the part that is bugging me and the part that I'd like to throw in front of the court.

I dispatched 2 different techs to the job. One on Friday night and a different one twice on Saturday and once on Sunday before I went myself later Sunday morning.

By Sunday, Tech #2 is calling the Service manager and, basically, complaining that this piece of equipment is "beyond his ability to repair"

Can any of you guys here IMAGINE saying that about ANYTHING?

Hell, I'd jump off the roof headfirst before admitting that I couldn't do my job, yet this joker called the boss and basically admitted that he was incapable of fixing the unit.

Heck, it was only $50k worth of frozen foods on the line. It can wait for JP to come fix it, right?

So, what do you DO with someone like this? I mean, I can't MAKE him learn, I'm not authorized to fire his a$$ which is what probably SHOULD happen to him, and I can't legally SHOOT him.

    JP,
I'm the most 'expectant' boss you'll ever find.....but that goes the same with myself. I then 'pay' the worker commensurate with the level of what he put in and/or met the challenge......thus Eric was sent to Hawaii with all his family all expenses paid with all his spending money blah blah blah.....
On the other hand I tell the guys that want to work for me, if you want to work 8-4:30, never take tech documents home nor upgrade your training or get onto the internet (this site is a prerequisite) and 'immerse yourself into your career' then you are working at the wrong place. I have no problem if you want to be a 'filter changer' but I get too bored doing linesets for A/A heat pumps thus I 'dig into crazy/interesting $hit' and 'expect the same from my crew so we stay away from low paying TPT jobs.
My advice, FWIW, is ask your boss if he want's his company represented by you or by Mr. DeSubCool. Because if it's both, that'll be impossible unless he's paying you another $15/hr 'babysitting' bonus. If THAT is not acceptable, then maybe it's time JPSmith Refrigeration was started.....
If your principles are compromised so much that your are now effectively a whore to the $.......or your boss, lazy a$$ed coworkers or God forbid yourself....you've gone to the dark side......can we say Wall Street???!!!!

I'd really like to hear what TB, Frank and Bret have to say on this......

I'd like to hear that JP's boss knows that he saved their bacon, $50k worth.

Roster or not, I like the idea that a good job is recognized, and that a lazy a$$ sob gets a stern talking to.

    Well done, JP.

    Well done, JP.
    It is becoming a pattern.

Tech #1 goes out on a call.

Tech #2 goes out on same call a few days later.

Sometimes, I'm so busy that Techs #1 and 2 get an extra shot or two at it. I HATE it when that happens.

Just about the time the customer Emails start flying, I ride in on my shiny, white pony and fix the problem.

The boss is starting to get it, I think.

I'm keeping records of this stuff and slowly building a case. Basically, my case goes this way:

"I'm a damned good tech, certainly one of the best that you have, Sir, it's about time you started paying me commensurate with that level of skill. I've saved this company's (Your) name here, here, here and here."

The idea of starting my own company gets to be appealing until I stop and think about it. If I'm really, truly honest with myself, I just am not the right guy to run a company. I'll be your flagship mechanic and I'll bust my balls for you day and night and through the next day if need be, but I don't think I'm the right guy to put his name on a truck.
