I bought a book and studied up a little on it. Seems fairly simple and pretty versatile.

I think I'll pick up an Arduino Uno and a breadboard and see what sort of silliness we can get up to...

For now, we're contenting ourselves with playing with Lego Power Functions kits we've had around.

I'm posing "engineering" challenges and they have to build a working model that meets my conditions. Then we talk about how and why it works, what can be made better and what happens if we change this or that component.

Today's lesson was gear ratios and how they affect speed.

I've done a little more research into Arduino and while it's really cool stuff and starts out simple, it gets REAL DEEP, REAL QUICK. I think it's a little over their heads at the moment and I don't want to overwhelm them nor do I want to do it all myself. That's kind of the point of "interactive time"

Despite the price, I've seriously been considering a Lego Mindstorm kit for them.

JP....YOU are the coolest Dad.....I wanna be a kid again. I got $hit from my ole man for 'wasting time' on my models and projects......."what the he11's the use of that anyway?"........thus I still work too much and try to measure up....???

JP (and Bret), you have NO IDEA how that investment will pay off......Secure, confident, kind, gentle, productive and industry leaders along with community leaders......completely balanced young men BECAUSE they got the MOST VALUABLE thing ANY child craves and needs........your time......
    Way to go guys.....

    Thanks, Doug.

I have to confess... They've both got their "things" that annoy me that I consider "wastes" of time and money.

The oldest goes in spells on these "fingerboards" http://www.simplifiedinternetdesign....ck_parts_2.jpg They're little skateboards about 3" long. Now, I'll help him assemble them, helped him build a ramp park for them and now, he's talking about building his own (layup lamination using wood veneer) and I'll help him with that, but when he wants to spend $25-30 bucks on a little tiny skateboard....

The little one. Well, he's a certified and certifiable computer junkie. The current obsession is Minecraft. Some form of digital legos or something like that. They start jabbering about it and I want to scream "NOBODY CARES!!!!" We occasionally have to have "Minecraft free afternoons" or dad will have a meltdown.

To the good, Sunday was a "minecraft free" afternoon. We took the bikes and went to the local bike trail. Rode almost 5 miles. It's a cool way to connect with the kids.

Next time, we'll do the whole trail (10 miles). I'll park the truck at the end and have momma deliver us to the start line.

I'm ALMOST done convincing Momma to ride. She's taken mine for a quick ride or two and hasn't fallen. She's talked to a few doctors who have confirmed the "low impact" that bicycling is. Now, I just gotta put one under her and get her worked up to keeping up with me. Course, I suppose that I could slow down for her, just a little...

mourning Bret & all. It's going to be a rough day today here for me. Hubby is got something on his tongue that does not look right. He showed it to me yesterday afternoon. He'll see the nurse tomorrow and have a look at it. Long story short, I took all of his snuff away. I can't see why he even started that nasty stuff but what can I say, he is a big boy and I'm not his momma. I'm sure with all the new ways of technology this can be fixed and I hope to God I can stay strong

I have said it many of times to quit that crap and even stop kissing him to show I disapproved of it but he's bigger than me ! Also he is on a nicotine lozenges AND he promised me he would never do it again. But looking at it this afternoon it seems to be having some pink to the sore but I'm no doctor & he'll see them tomorrow mourning. Thanks all for letting me rant and I'm still nervous as He(( but we'll get past this as if it is cancer this will make the 3rd time in his body
