Got to play with a neat thing today.

    It's being called a "Non-compression cascade system"

    Basically, a thermosyphon.

The rack system runs a plate heat exchanger. In the secondary side, there is refrigerant that is condensed by the plate HX, separated through a phase separator. The liquid runs down into the coils (no metering device), boils off.

The vapor rises back up, through the phase separator and back into the plate HX.

All flow in the secondary is natural. No pumps or other means to move fluid.

All in all, a pain in the A$$ because you have to add a little gas and wait for it to react. Slow, painful and tedious, but there are 2 of them running happily away after today.

Sounds similar to the old KeepRite Q-pipe system...

Never seen one, nor have I heard of it.

I DID, however, discover that the 1200 does just as AWESOME of a job measuring approach temperature as it does measuring superheat.

    What refrigerant did they use?

Here's the heat pipe....basically individual pipes part filled with refrigerant and the outgoing heat boils it and it ascends up the tilted pipe to the cold air stream which condenses and it runs back down to the the 'hot' side....again

In this case, 404a on both sides of the system.

The biggest pain is charging it. There is not a good and clear-cut method for determining the charge for the secondary side.

They call it "trial and observation"

I call it "gas it and guess"

Now that I read through that, I have seen a heat pipe, once.

I have no idea if it was working or not as I had no real idea what I was actually looking at nor did I have any real idea of how to test it.

    It just seems too simple.

Of course, the simplest answers are nearly always the best.
