Perhaps the basic question is whether mathematics is a Platonic form.

For me, it stretches credulity to think that mathematics is a separate, perfect world that is is being discovered by mathematical study. More likely is the idea that the relationships of real world objects is increasingly understood by use of mathematics, as a growing area of knowledge based on man's ability to apply mathematical forms to real world objects. As man seeks to understand the real world, he devises mathematical models to describe objects and relationships.


In other words, Fibonacci sequences did not need to exist in order for the Sunflower to arrange its seeds, or for bee lineage to display such a sequence.

I miss my old Philosophy instructor. I should go and visit him.
