I remember when I was young my Dad told me that 'it's got very little to do with what you want....but what you need to do'. IMHO, we need to expose (read: shove them into some $hit sometimes even though they don't like it) our kids to some hard work, labour, book learning/school so they will thank us later....As parents we are not in a popularity contest.....it's about 'guiding' our kids into the right choices. Ain't no free frickin lunch in this house....they work from 10 years old on and 'contribute' to the family first then society. Too much these days about what I want instead of what I need to do...
I forced all three of my daughters to ride shotgun with me for a couple weeks each summer and crawl around in $hithole crawlspaces full of water, rat $hit, carcasses etc so they could see what their old man did to feed them and pay their school....they are all self starters now and since they have a 'relative scale' now, they choose to be hard working......

Send him up here for a month.....we'll break him in for ya....
I caught this very thing happening to my kids.

All about 'ME' and nothing about anyone else.

I have been spending time thinking about how to break them of it.

I like the idea of riding shotgun with me. It might happen this summer, especially with the older one. Not so sure about the little one, yet, he is only 6.

I agree..... to many round here have EVERYTHING handed to them. 1. just to shut them up. 2. to keep them out of their parents hair. 3 to keep up with the Jones'
I tell him constantly if he cant help out family he cant go out and help someone else... especially someone he really doesnt know. When I tell em to dotheir chores and they whine about how hard of a day they had... I ask them if they want to switch jobs,... Of course they say no.

Kind of hard to have em ride with ya when its against company policy. When I do a side job I ask my youngest if he wants to help... (of course he asks how much am I going to pay him! heheh which I do) If my oldest is still around .... maybe next time i will ask him.

working hard from a young age is the only way to instill a good work ethic. That is one of the reasons I like to work with people that lived on a farm when they were young, because they grew up knowing how to work.

There was a dead cat in the crawlspace with me the other day putting in a furnace, and we named it Timmy. So used to stuff like that that I don't pay it much mind.

The hot dog has been eaten (family Thanksgiving planned for Saturday with
Tex-Mex on the menu) and thoughts of what I'm thankful for sent heavenward...

...including the fact that Bret brightens our day even when he's having
    a bad one.

    Happy Thanksgiving, Bret and all!

Just got back from the restaurant where I had dinner with my RN friend, my dad, his friend, and her friend. Great food, nice conversation, no pressure.
