The biggest impediment that most kids have to success is their parents. The more that you expect from a child, the more that they will deliver.


Well, first archery deer season is over for me. No deer, yet. Rifle season starts up after thanksgiving, so we'll see what happens then.

I had 4 coming through. Nicked one but didn't make a lethal shot and he's still running around.

Had a couple of jokers move into my area and spooked all of the deer out. Since they moved in, I've only seen 2 panicked deer.


I think I'm going to move my stand a bit for next year and hang another one. I'm going to need an extra stand next year. Boy#1 will be hunting on his own next year.

'Morning Bret and everyone. I won't get the chance to go out hunting this season, but I'm definitely planning on it next season.. Also gonna get more offhand and optics experience. In any case the only rifle that I have that'll reliably take down anything larger than a gopher is still down for modifications.

In PA, they have special youth opportunities. I took him out and he hunted all day, waiting for that shot.

When he got it, he hit a twig and it deflected his shot.

Y'know JP my old man struggled his entire life trying to make ends meet and was racked with guilt in 'not spending enough time with his boys'.....but he couldn't, he had to do 'first things first' which was food and shelter. I am 56 years old and I gotta tell you.....I remember 50 years ago like it was frickin' 2 seconds ago.....walking with my Dad over windrows of wheat making our duck blinds to hide under. I remember almost every detail of that 16 gauge gun of his and chasing down the ducks after the shots. I remember the trips with Dad and Woody to hunt Hungarian Partridge with Ray and I trying to catch a winged one for 5 minutes without success......

Buddy, you have no idea how huge an impact and character building you are doing.....
I didn't hunt with my girls but did a lot of biking and when it all comes down to it......they don't want the 'stuff/trinkets/junk' etc......they want your time..... JP and Bret......way to go. You have NO IDEA how much you will cherish these memories.....
And also for your Boys......way to go.....

I always try to think about what I felt like as a 10-12-15 year old boy when making a decision that affects time with my kids.

My dad worked all the time. Not entirely sure it was just to "make ends meet" but that's neither here nor there. For quite a few years in my adolescent years, my dad worked 200+ miles away. He left home on Sunday night and didn't come back until Friday night.

It was awful. I've turned down job opportunities; opportunities that might have taken me farther ahead in the career trail, because I simply REFUSE to do that.

My dad showed me how not to raise a kid, parents were divorced when I was 3. Me and my brothers went to his house every other weekend and a lot of times he was out playing in his rock band at bars. I know he realizes now that he lost any real relationship with us and he regrets it. When we were together hunting fishing and trapping is what we did so those are the things I enjoy most in my life. So know I have a 4 and 2 year old and wouldn't know what to do if I didn't see them everyday!

I was very lucky my Dad work often 60 plus hour a week when I was young I went into work with him often I saw work ethic as a part of character When he was not working he spent most his free time with us kids and mom. He did what you're doing JP turned down promotions for the family.

JP you're a great dad. Trust me if you ever are with faced being told your life maybe be short. You'll look back and smile I say I did choices the path to success.
