I don't usually suggest that many emails be forwarded, but I'd be EXTREMELY proud if this one reached as many as possible. We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve.

    God Bless them all!!!

It is a sad day indeed that we have lost so many in the defense of freedom around the world, but it is extraordinary how willing so many have been who have served.

To all of you vets, "a job well done."

    Thank you!

Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,

To you from failing hands we throw

If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

Bow your heads today guys at 11am and give a thanx for what we have as a result of the sacrifices of those serving past and present; here and no longer here, that sacrificed for all others.....thinking not of themselves.....
    Great post, Dug.

    Hey Dug,
    ofcourse I am a veteran 1983-1986 ARMY

on July 3rd 1984 my best friend PVT Brian Pikarski was shot with a 50 cal machine gun and died in my arms, I was 19.
I delivered his belongings to his family in North Dakota and his car sat in my driveway for a year. as a reminder.

In November of 1965 I lost my Dad in Nam!
I was only 6 months old!
I got an abusive stepdad to take his place, I would dream about my real Dad but I guess my country needed him more than me!

I always wondered what I would have turned out like if I had a father and did not have all those anger problems holding me back?

    Frank,
Thanx for sharing.....I couldn't even imagine the pain and anguish a man of our age would be able to deal with another young man dying in your arms....much worse a 19 year old.
I was fortunate to have a Dad come home and raise me and my brother. He did however render some severe beatings and was a heavy drinker who was perpetually angry. His Dad died and in the 30s a grandfather had only a few years to impart 'manhood' into a young man so he beat it into Dad. My Dad tried his best but followed the same parental methods. Someday I'll share with you how he completely and totally apologized to me in the last 2 years when we had him living here. I was paralyzed and mute for a day....Dad didn't apologize even to Mom.
He did his best for those days with the 'modest' toolbox he had.....I love him dearly.
And Frank, don't go telling everyone but in think you turned out pretty damned good.

Doug, your dad sounds a lot like my dad's dad. He passed before I was born, and I must have been 17 years old before my dad mentioned his name. Turns out it was "Neil," the same name as my aunt's oldest son, one of my three cousins.

I had met my grandmother when I was a child and she was still living, and I had heard most of my dad's stories about the RCMP band, the Musical Ride, the fingerprinting division at RCMP HQ, and his time in the RCAF, but not a word about his dad. When I asked my mom about it one time, she said that she thought he had "not been very nice." My mom had a talent for understatement.

All I know of the guy is that he had a little tailor shop in New Westminster, and he was of Scottish descent, and that he was "a strict disciplinarian."

Sounds like your experience may have paralleled my dad's.
