Hey Canknuckleheads! check this out..... changing out a compressor with a new kid.... we were adjusting the charge. Almost done.... Our owner walks up and hands me a key to a place in 4x4 land and tells me about it. Then..... wants to know where my digital gauges are!! (me)I dont have any....(him) well thats going to change! He tells me he wants s/h and s/c and pressures and temps written down. Asks me if I was using service facts... I pulled the sheet out from my clipboard... ask me how I am adjusting the charge,,, told him.... asks my new kid if he is asking questions.... I said yes and I was answering them and asking him questions! I was on my game. But I was a bit miffed about the digital gauges. I think to many ppl rely on them and a lot of techs dont even understand how to charge a system with analog gauges and thermometers. So if you can teach a newbie how to the old fashioned way.... he should understand whats going on with digital right??? Sheesh!

Yup and make sure you pull out that RS1 to get the amperage readings along with the voltage reading. Be sure to 'ice water bath' calibrate your gas filled thermometer as you pick up your slide-rule and paper charts on the way out of the cabin before you jump into your horse and buggy.......
I can't believe we are having this discussion in 2009.....I got my first Fluke DMM in '81 and we are still 'gonna do $hit the ol fashioned way'......for what reason.....to be less accurate and save money......
Our brothers in the mechanical trade have tool cabinets with $60-80,000.00 worth of tools and we whine about spending $2500/yr on tools....any wonder electricians and plumbers call us 'prima-donnas'

Calculators are great, but knowing how to do the math on paper is important. I plan on buying some of your gauges, but understanding how and why to adjust a charge is also important.

I also did a test. I showed those pictures with alleged cars and bows and what-not to my wife last night.

She was able to see the other stuff just fine. She called me a PIG and slapped me.

I agree with your principle. Every new pilot learns to navigate using a chart and an E6B.

And, I'm one of those guys who spends a LOT more than $2,500 a year on tools. This year, it will be a real burden, because I lost $17,000 in tools when the truck was stolen.

Technology is great, but I meet far too many kids that can't make change at the Mc D's when the "change" key on the register stops working.

Read and understood as well as agreed BUT after we learn algebra we still use a calculator....too many calls, distractions etc to figure out the 'long hand' method without making mistakes.........
Now, which do you guys use with a ZeoTrope or Ternary blend to calculate SubCooling......Bubble Point or Dew Point Temp.?????
