Obviously, there is a need for modern medicine.
My wife would have been dead at 36 without it from a genetic condition. She is currently burning up over $125k annually in health insurance to prevent a relapse that probably WOULD kill her this time.
Now, Doug has an excellent point as well, and our doctors (well, MINE is) are pushing it but people aren't hearing it. Exercise is VERY important to a long and healthy life as is proper diet.
I wouldn't want to go back in time in the medical field and NOT treat disease with the medications that we have. Personally, I think that trying to ignore the advances we have made in medicine is foolish.
That said, I ALSO think that reaching for a magic pill each and every time you don't feel 100% right is foolish as well... Feeling blue? Take a pill. Can't get it up? Take a pill. Can't sleep? Take a pill. Can't lose weight? Take a pill. Take a pill. Take a pill. Take a pill. Take pill. Take a pill.
The question is "which came first?" Was it the pharmaceuticals or lazy people looking for a magic pill?
I'll leave that for each person to decide. I don't know the answer.

There's a whole host of information now available (in Canada that is anyway) suggesting that the next big pandemic is diabetes from mainly the sugar, lard and sedentary lifestyle.....can't understand why our youth would look to drugs to cure their ills....
But that of course would be from a ignorant Canuck with socialized medicine....that also just got off the mountain from a 2 hour bike ride.
Here's the view from an ignorant Canuck's POV.
See how good Art's eyes are ..... there landing lights (too low) in the one pic....
Doug,
I think you missed the point. I am not advocating meds over a healthy lifestyle. In my original post meds was mentioned last. You may be anti medication but for some on this board their meds have given them a new lease on life along with their comittment to a healthier lifestyle.
I totally agree that Diabetes is out of control in this country. Young and old eat and eat and eat as if it were their last meal. My own family is as guilty as the next. They choose to be unhealthy. Just one of them in a 172 would exceed the weight and balance check. A healthy lifestyle is a choice. When medication is needed it should be taken as ordered by a licensed physician.
By the way the mountain biking sounds like fun and a real workout. Certaintly more strenuous then flying a 172. However, landing on a crystal clear night is the best thrill!!
You are interesting and I enjoy reading and learning from your posts. Have a great evening. ^I^ Julie ^I^

JP...Congratulations to your wife for finding the treatment for her genetic condition that has allowed her to live. And as you both know this care is not cheap. My IV Chemo was $12,000/treatment and I received 5 months of biweekely treatments. Fortunately, my health insurace paid for 100% with no questions asked. Now the oral chemo is $11,000/month. I have done extremely well and to look at me all you would see is a fairly skinny blonde who likes to shop and does not look sick. To God I give thanks and glory for this.
Your perspective is right on the money. I spent 20years in the pharm/hospital diagnostic community and we need all things in moderation.
May you and your wife spend a Happy New Year reveling in her good fortune .

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency
Not a common condition, but it causes breathing problems and, eventually, liver problems.
Fortunately, I don't have it so, thus far, my kids are clear. They have to be tested every couple of years, though, just to be sure.
