    Crash and Burn

This Thing ran since Aug. 27, 1997. Only stopped for power outages.

ACH500 were a work horse. The caps are typically designed for 20 years as long as they have power applied. There is no worry of them drying out then. Looks like an internal failure caused the boom. Sorry for your loss..

Yep, we've got some that we put in about 1996. Maybe 1997. That're still chugging along just fine. Tho one of that batch (there were 8 on the whole job) rolled over and died this winter.

Not bad. Seeing as how the customer has never done any maintenance on any of them. Or even looked at them since they were put in.

After some Dis-Assembly with a claw hammer, I believe the problem was critters.

    Yep, critters.

The noise from the cooling fans tends to scare them away, but without power
they like to cuddle up between the DC bus bars. Nice and warm.

Then suddenly they get the 650vdc shock of their little life. Their whole life flashes before their little eyes as they vaporize into a puff of smoke.

Meanwhile the inrush current chars everything in its path.

would have been better if the critters in question were the ones from 'Tremors'
