Before I went to the private jets, I looked into all of the commuters, including Colgan. People who think that HVAC techs are not viewed well, should try being on a new hire track for a commuter. Lots of bright young faces who will have their meager income augmented by mom and dad. This and the many applicants lets the carriers offer squat for pay.

I think if you ask your brother, he will tell you that UPS was the better job!

not a pilot but we had a plane crash locally here this week...pilot blacked out, f-16's scrambled because pilot was not talking to tower.

Flying is my passion. Was looking at flying as a career but the industry is very up and down. I'm HVAC tech and do it out of necessity.

Flying is great. As a career, it is a lie. For every Sully who is highly paid and satisfied, there are 10,000 others that are not, and never will be paid well, valued, or treated as though they are anything other than a required "expense."

One day while preparing for a flight, the other pilot turns to me and says he read that Lufthansa is replacing copilots with German Shepard dogs. He continued "the pilot's job is to watch the automated cockpit readings and to feed the dog."

"If the pilot touches anything, it's the dog's job to bite the pilot."

I currently have 33 hours in the left seat of a C152. I'm supposed to fly tomorrow morning, if it's not raining. I hope to have my license around 40-45 hours. I am doing it strictly for enjoyment, I'm not quiting my day job.

Timebuilder, so what made change careers from flying to HVAC ? Lack of opportunity? economy? Life circumstances? For me its the fact that my family needs to comes first and second a piloting career, initially, is a poor ROI. I've been in the trade for many years and difficult to move onto some thing else career wise. Now I'm in the process of starting my own business.
