Pretty common. Not familiar with their remotes specifically, but all remotes I've seen use radio frequency and as such are vulnerable to interference from household electronics, garage door openers, other fireplace remotes etc. For this reason there is usually a method change the frequency it transmits on which is a simpler and less expensive solution than replacing the entire thing.
