I have done it before, it worked, and I have done larger size pipe as well, with two mapp oxy kits, one had a dual tip, so I had 3 points of heat on the pipe, it finally got hot enough to melt the 15%. This was an after hours, back in the day, emergency repair when no one opened for no amount of money after the door was locked for the day.

from what I remember it's not the temperature of mapp that is the problem, but the hydrogen content. leaves the joint prone to cracking

    MAPP in air is 3670F
    MAPP in oxygen is 5300F
    MAP/Pro in air is 3730F
    MAP/Pro in oxygen 5200F
    Acetylene in air is 4622F
    Acetylene in oxygen is 5612F

Old MAPP gas used propadiene. The company that made it stopped in 2008. MAP/Pro uses propylene gas. It may leave a residue on some surfaces such as glass.

If the homeowner did the torchwork, then I wonder who charged it up? I haven't run into this yet, but I wouldn't charge a system like that. I wouldn't want to be associated with it in any way.

Actually MAPP burns at 2010 celsius, Acetylene burns at 2500 celsius, after adding oxygen to each, it is 2927 and 3480 celsius. Propane is 1967 and 2526 celsius, maybe you got propane confused with Acetylene.

I do some work for an individual, he has more different freon and refrigerant than I ever have, he will buy a jug off ebay or where ever if he has ever had to pay a guy to put it in at some point. he actually has a 30 lb jug of R600, because a refrigerator he bought has it in it, just in case it ever needs it... Lawyers pfff.... LOL
