In my area the owner would be told to re point the chimney or tare it down.
that is a death trap waiting to fall on someone.

Why didnt they just use the interlocking blocks that people use for patios? That's going to fall and kill someone, if the CO doesn't kill them on the inside.

There's no joint space - are you sure it's not just stacked brick?

If so it would be easy to fix - you could just gorilla glue it together.

The conventional view serves to protect us from the painful job of thinking.

Not any worst than a million chimneys in Philly. We just relined one that caused PGW( ulitity) to Red Tag a gas furnace and water heater that were backdrafting. Chimney was lined with unlisted rigid stainless steel--sorta. You see, there is a LOT of 'roll your own' chimney liner in Philly. Contractors roll unlisted pipe, both galvy and ss, and install with electroplated screws. Those screws rust out and the joint fails leading to pipe dislodging and backdrafting. Sometimes they put it in male up, some down. In this case, they did it both. At one point, they spliced the liner---with cheap foil tape. Another section was ovalized, which reduces the flow capacity. Then it crossed over from one brick flue into an adjacent one that lead to a sealed off fireplace. From there, it turned, rubbed past some charred wood before re-entering the same flue it started in. The breeching was jammed in tight next to the coil so inspection or service were impossible. We had to open the fireplace and the outside wall in the alley to correct it with a Ul listed one piece ss liner. Now he knows why my original bid was three times that of the closest competitor. Oh, btw, the exterior chimney was covered with roll roofing. Yes, combustible roll roofing. We have to cut it away, parge the chimney with stucco mix, rebuild the top three courses corbelling them in then set a precast crown for the ss top plate and rain cap to rest on.
